Chapter 15
Grant stepped inside Charlieâs Bar and Grill with Mallory. Country music played on the jukebox and a few couples were dancing. âWhere would you like to sit?â
She pointed to some booths on the far side of the room. âIt might be a little quieter over there.â
They chose a table and took off their jackets.
He handed her a menu. âYou seem happier than when I left you on Sunday.â
âIâm trying my best to stay positive. Tess has been great and Iâve appreciated your phone calls.â
âHow is Tank working out?â
âIt felt strange to start with, but heâs a nice person. The staff at the hospital are impressed with my bodyguard.â
âHeâll keep you safe.â
Malloryâs smile slipped. âI know he will, but itâs not easy. Iâve been worried about whatâs going to happen next. For the last three days Iâve been looking over my shoulder, waiting for the person who broke into my home to do something. I just want all of this to be finished.â
âI know you do.â
Mallory rubbed her forehead. âIt could get a lot worse before it gets better.â
Grant reached out and held her hand. âWhy donât you take some time off work? With the police and Fletcher Security working on Simonâs files and your burglary, it wonât be long until theyâve got the answers they need.â
âIf I did that it would be worse. I need something to keep me busy.â
âYou still need to spend a day with me on my ranch. Why donât you come and stay with me after the Winter Festival? Iâve got plenty of spare bedrooms and the ranch hands arenât far away. I could take you back to Tessâ home on Sunday evening.â
Doubt clouded Malloryâs eyes. âI donât want to put you in any danger. If something happens on your ranch, weâre a long way from Bozeman.â
Grant leaned forward. âI have enough security hooked up to deter even the most seasoned bad guy. But I donât think the person trying to scare you is particularly bad.â
Mallory frowned. âWhy not?â
âBreaking into your home wasnât the worst thing someone could do to scare you.â
âYou need to read the full report John gave us. Juan Garcia knows how to scare people. He evicted a whole village to make way for the resort he was building with Simonâs parents.â
âIf thatâs the case, John was right. The CIA need to be involved. Is your family okay?â
âI called Mom and Dad last night and told them someone broke into my house. They were glad Iâm staying with Tess.â
âDid you tell them about the files in Simonâs account?â
âNo. But I asked them to let me know if anything strange happens. I donât want to worry them.â Mallory fell silent when a waitress stopped beside their table.
After theyâd placed their dinner and drink orders, she sighed. âTell me about you. What was it like being in the military?â
Grant shrugged. âI was proud to serve my country but, at times, it felt like the loneliest career in the world. The guys in my team became my family.
